Snippet prev/next coupled with subsequent edits may cause the buffer to contain
an unexpected snippet placeholder. Handle it gracefully.

Lua 5.3 made them optional and LuaJIT support has been dropped.

Also updated to Lua 5.3 syntax where held back by LuaJIT's 5.1/5.2 syntax.

delimited strings.
